What causes Chronic Pain and what can you do about it?

Chronic pain can be debilitating. Pain that lasts more than three months or beyond the normal amount of time except for your life. There are many different things that could be the root cause of your chronic pain. From illnesses to musculoskeletal problems getting down to the trigger of what is causing it is vital to maintain your mental and physical health.

Some chronic pain can be traced to a specific injury. Many cases of chronic pain are related to these conditions:

  • Low back pain
  • Arthritis/Osteoarthritis
  • Fibromyalgia – TOXIC (gut recovery) – IV Therapy/Nutrients
  • Headache
  • Fibromyalgia – TOXIC (gut recovery)  – IV Therapy/Nutrients
  • Yeast overgrowth
  • Nerve Damage
  • Shingles
  • Small fiber nerve changes that contribute to imbalances

Small fiber nerve changes in the body can be triggered by food, poor diet, and poor sleep. We do testing to identify the root causes of the inflammation and develop a treatment plan.

How to Treat Chronic Pain

Getting to the root cause of your pain is what we do best. We evaluate, address and treat the physical causes, not just the symptoms of chronic pain and inflammation. Putting a focus on food sensitivities, diet and other potential triggers for pain, we are able to help patients get well and get to the next level in their wellness journey.

Some of the specific treatments we offer are:

  • LET Therapy

Lymph enhancement therapy is a modality of increasing lymph fluid. It uses low vibrational energy provided by radio-frequency waves which increases lymph flow and increases the breaking down of protein-rich fluid in the tissue space. It has been shown to benefit in lymphedema as well as conditions that involve chronic and acute inflammation and pain. Sessions usually run for about 45 minutes.
  • Acupuncture
  • Nutrition Consultations
  • IV Therapy
  • Regenerative Medicine
  • Photobiomodulation
  • Infrared Sauna

Natural Ways to Treat Chronic Pain

There are many different therapies that we at Shakthi Health and Wellness Center can utilize to help you with your chronic pain. We try to take an integrative approach that utilizes both traditional and holistic methods. Natural remedies are a more gentle approach that works with your body’s natural systems. There are plenty of natural remedies that one can use to help treat chronic pain.

Herbal Remedies

Depending on what the chronic pain stems from there are herbal remedies that can help elevate the pain associated with them. For instance, if you're suffering from rheumatoid arthritis then you might choose to drink tea with white Willow bark which helps reduce pain and inflammation. On the other hand, if you have fibromyalgia, using a tea made of ginger and primrose could help relieve the muscle pain.

The only thing you have to be cautious of when using herbal remedies, especially when dealing with chronic pain is the interaction it potentially could have with prescription medications that you have been taking. We utilize your medical history along with our own in-depth analysis to ensure that there are no negative interactions between the herbal remedies that we suggest, and the prescription drugs you currently are taking.

Massage

Sometimes chronic pain is housed in the fact that your muscles are tight. That means that a nice massage cannot only help with the pain but get rid of the stress and anxiety that come along with it. Using their hands to manipulate your muscles and soft tissue massage therapists are able to relax your body and relieve inflammation and pain.

Mind-Body Practices

Whether you choose meditation or another mind-body technique like yoga the mind is the most powerful tool we have. The pillars of these mindfulness practices all center around relieving stress and helping to improve your interaction with the world around you.

This may not seem like something that could do with chronic pain but improving your mood and getting rid of stress and anxiety will help relieve some of the tension and that could be just the ticket to helping you manage your chronic pain better.

Exercise

Exercise helps with several of the symptoms that can make chronic pain worse. Things like poor circulation, stiffness in the joints, and tight muscles oh increase the pain when dealing with this chronic illness. Exercise gets everything moving and stretches everything out so that you can manage your pain better.

Diet

Nutrition in your diet campaign part and your overall treatment for chronic pain. You'll want to eat a diet that's rich in foods that are designed to reduce inflammation. Things like omega-3 fatty acids, soy products, and leafy greens are all wonderful additions to a diet that could potentially help you combat chronic pain.

On the other hand, you'll want to stay away from things like chocolate, red meat, tomatoes, and eggs because these all have potential risk factors of increasing inflammation which will worsen your chronic pain.

Hydration

When your body is dealing with chronic pain you will find yourself being dehydrated much easier and for long periods of time. This means in order to help treat your chronic pain you should ensure that you are drinking enough water every day. Also trying to stay away from caffeinated drinks as much as possible because they only exacerbate dehydration

Susan Doyle

I started by seeing Dr. Sudhir Rao for my Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) Syndrome. I had an accident in July 2010 that caused nerve damage in my ankle. After treatments and surgery, it spread up the entire left side of my body. The only way to describe how you feel is by saying you’re a human pinball machine ? you just never know where the pain is going to be that minute. I had asked about acupuncture because someone had told me that it worked for them. I was at the point of trying anything to lessen the pain because it was getting worse every day.

Anonymous Patient

I am actually a relatively healthy 50-year-old woman. I try to eat well and exercise, but I (like many) felt the creep of age in the form a subtle pounds and decreasing energy. Dr. Rao helped point me in the direction of the correct detox program for me (Core Restore!) as well as the supplements I needed to boost my metabolism and increase my energy! I still need to eat what works for me and avoid the things that don't, and I still have to exercise every day, but my clothes fit better and I have more energy!!

Anna Smoot

I came to see Dr. Rao with symptoms of chronic fatigue, abdominal pains, depression, and weight gain. I had seen a couple other doctors and they had found that I had very high inflammation levels and over 15 food allergies/sensitivities. They wanted me to just take prescription drugs, but I wanted more than a quick fix. I wanted my health and my life back! When I scheduled the appointment, I was surprised how by helpful Kelly was on the phone. I didn’t know the details of my insurance coverage and Kelly offered to call my insurance for me. I’ve never had anyone at a doctor’s office do that before.

Debbie Helman

After visiting the Shakthi website and reading other patient testimonials, I was curious about the wide variety of treatments that were available. I have a very slow metabolism, was fatigued, had insomnia, back pain, and just didn’t feel as well as I wanted to in general. I had more allergic reactions and respiratory issues in the preceding months before coming to see Dr. Jyothi Rao. I had completed three courses of prednisone while under the treatment of my traditional doctor and was fed up with that cycle and was looking for another path.

Linda J.

I was given the gift of Dr. Rao's primary care for Christmas in 2016. I didn?t take advantage of it until March of 2017. My mindset at the time was negative. I had heard about changing eating habits and I felt that I liked the foods I was eating and I was nearly 70, so why change now? After meeting with Dr. Rao and hearing her suggestions, I said I would take it one small step at a time and see what happens.

I was in the worst shape of my life

I was in the worst shape of my life with depression and anxiety. I had given up. Shakthi provided me with a manageable plan that included supplements, diet, and an exercise program that has transformed my body and given me a new outlook on life. Perhaps the most surprising outcome was learning how to be healthy and have a good relationship with my body. I am now more productive, energetic, and focused. The fog that had been clouding my thoughts has lifted.
