What Is Considered Complimentary Healthcare

When trying to improve and enhance your health, you may receive various advice on several different methods to do so. There can be multiple approaches to elevating your vitality, and several therapies may be mentioned. The most common are “complementary,” “alternative,” and “integrative.” These terms may be used interchangeably, but they should not be. So what do these terms actually mean?

“Alternative Medicine” will refer to a health care approach that is used instead of conventional medicine. “Complementary Medicine” will refer to a health care approach that is used with conventional medicine. And “Integrative Medicine” will refer to traditional health care approaches and complementary health care approaches being incorporated for a patient in a structured, and coordinated process.

What Is Complementary Medicine?

A Complimentary Medicine definition can be described as when a non-traditional approach is used in conjunction with traditional (read: Western) medical approach to treating a condition or whole body wellness. When the nonconventional approaches are used with conventional medical treatments, it can be identified as complementary health care.

When a patient integrates multiple modalities to treat a health concern, they are supporting their vitality with complementary health. The goal of complimentary health care is to help patients enhance their health in a supported fashion.

Physicians who follow a complementary medicine approach will encourage patients to continue with their conventional treatments while utilizing other treatments to better support their care. This approach promotes patients to better achieve their health care goals. Physicians will first review their patient’s personal medical history, evaluate how external factors affect their patient, and review any additional personal information about their patient to be able to provide them quality health care.

What Is Complementary Health Care?

Complementary health care approaches can be categorized by their delivery (how the therapy is internalized by the patient). Typically, there are classifications for the way complementary medicine is applied in a patient’s life. These primary inputs include nutritional, physical, emotional, and emotional and physical, and/or emotional & nutritional. These therapy approaches can be defined as:

Specialty diets, structured nutritional habits, the inclusion of herbs, prebiotics, probiotics, and dietary supplements.

Spinal manipulation, chiropractic therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, reiki, and biomat application

Counseling, meditation, hypnosis, relaxation therapy

Emotional & Physical:

A combination of emotional and physical therapies like yoga, dance, or art therapy

Emotional & Nutritional:

Cognitive behavior therapy to avoid emotional eating, mindful eating, and eating intuitively

When approaching nutritional practices, these include the incorporation of natural products, whereas emotional and/or physical practices include to body and mind practices.

What Is Complementary Therapy?

Complementary therapy practices can be found under the branch of Integrative Medicine. Integrative health care combines standard medical practices with complementary approaches in a structure fashion. This deliberate and coordinated care plan allows patients to maximize the effectiveness of their treatments while enhancing their health.

Complementary medicine therapy places an emphasis on whole body wellness rather than one condition or one body part. Patients may be encouraged to participate in multiple modalities like conventional medicine, psychotherapy, and lifestyle changes. To incorporate a complementary medical approach for your health and wellness, you may have the inclusion of several health care providers.

Some complimentary therapies may include:

  • Acupuncture
  • Homeopathy
  • Nutritional therapy
  • Diet changes
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Reiki
  • Tai Chi
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
  • Reflexology
  • Ayurvedic medicine
  • Chiropractic medicine

Patients incorporate complementary medicine therapies to better enhance their physical and health potentials. Complementary medicine supports conventional therapies to elevate your health and promote total body wellness.

The incorporation of complementary medicine has grown in popularity in the United States over the years. Under the umbrella of integrative medicine, many individuals have been exploring the benefits of complementary medicine. What started as “alternative medicine” became complementary as providers and patients realized the value of combining therapies. Combining these modalities established better care for the whole person and encouraged whole body wellness.

The relationship between these two approaches (standard vs alternative) may have started individually, but over time have been combined as a medical discipline itself.

Above And Beyond

I came to see Dr. Rao with symptoms of chronic fatigue, abdominal pains, depression, and weight gain. I had seen a couple other doctors and they had found that I had very high inflammation levels and over 15 food allergies/sensitivities. They wanted me to just take prescription drugs, but I wanted more than a quick fix. I wanted my health and my life back!
