Jyothi Rao

Dr. Jyothi Rao has been practicing medicine for over 20 years. She received her Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and completed her internship and residency at the prestigious New England Medical Center (Tufts) in Boston. Before opening Shakthi Health & Wellness Center, Dr. Rao practiced medicine in New York and Maryland.

Sudhir Rao

Dr. Sudhir Rao obtained his Medical Doctorate from St. George's University School of Medicine, and is the founder of Pain and Spine Specialists. Despite Dr. Rao's years of training focusing on traditional medicine, he developed a strong interest in Functional and Integrative Medicine to treat chronic illness with alternative methods after a personal experience with limitations in traditional medicine.

What Is Photobiomodulation?

What Is Photobiomodulation?

Photobiomodulation is a cutting-edge medical treatment that uses light to stimulate, heal, and regenerate damaged tissues in your body. It's a non-invasive, painless therapy that harnesses the power of light at specific wavelengths to trigger biological reactions in your cells.

But why are patients like you turning to photobiomodulation? The answer lies in its profound potential to promote healing and resilience. By targeting the source of various health issues, this therapy aims to enhance your body's natural healing mechanisms instead of merely masking symptoms.

Whether you're dealing with chronic pain, skin conditions, or neurological issues, photobiomodulation could offer you a beacon of hope. It's part of a broader approach to health that empowers you to address the underlying causes of illness and foster resilience.

Where Did PBM Originate?

The concept of harnessing light for healing is not new. Ancient civilizations, like the Egyptians and Greeks, recognized the therapeutic properties of sunlight. However, the birth of modern photobiomodulation traces back to the 1960s with the advent of lasers.

Dr. Endre Mester from Hungary is credited with the discovery of photobiomodulation. In 1967, he conducted an experiment using a low-power ruby laser to treat tumors in mice. While the treatment didn't shrink the tumors as expected, he noticed a fascinating side effect. The laser stimulated hair growth and wound healing in the treated mice. This unexpected outcome marked the dawn of photobiomodulation therapy.

Since then, research into photobiomodulation has burgeoned. Scientists and medical professionals worldwide have delved deeper into understanding how specific wavelengths of light can stimulate cellular activity and promote healing. Today, photobiomodulation has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use and is used to address a wide range of health concerns, from chronic pain to skin conditions and neurological issues.

How Does Photobiomodulation Work?

Understanding how a treatment works can empower you on your path to wellness. When it comes to photobiomodulation, the process is as fascinating as it is beneficial. Let's explore how this innovative therapy harnesses light to stimulate healing and resilience in your body.

Photobiomodulation therapy operates on a cellular level. The light emitted by the device isn't just any light. It's carefully calibrated to specific wavelengths that interact with your body's cells.

A step-by-step look at what happens during a photobiomodulation session includes:

  • Light Emission:
  • The photobiomodulation device emits light at specific wavelengths. This light is carefully calibrated to ensure maximum therapeutic benefit.
  • Tissue Penetration
  • The emitted light penetrates your skin and underlying tissues. Unlike UV light, which can cause damage, the light used in photobiomodulation is safe and beneficial.
  • Cellular Interaction
  • Once the light reaches your cells, it interacts with mitochondria, the powerhouses of your cells. This reaction triggers increased production of a molecule called adenosine triphosphate(ATP).
  • Enhanced Energy Production:
  • ATP is essentially the energy currency of your cells. By boosting ATP production, photobiomodulation enhances cellular energy, promoting healing and regeneration.
  • Stimulated Healing:
  • With increased energy, your cells can better repair and regenerate themselves. This process can lead to reduced inflammation, pain relief, and improved overall well-being.

As you can see, photobiomodulation is more than just a therapy. It's a comprehensive approach to health that targets the root causes of various health concerns. By understanding how it works, you're taking an active role in your health and wellness.

When Is Laser Therapy Used?

Laser therapy is applied across a broad spectrum of conditions. It operates by enhancing cellular energy production, which in turn promotes healing and reduces inflammation.

Photobiomodulation is currently being used to address conditions such as:

  • Chronic Pain: Whether it's back pain, arthritis, or fibromyalgia, laser therapy can help alleviate discomfort by reducing inflammation and promoting tissue healing.
  • Wound Healing: By stimulating cellular activity, laser therapy accelerates the healing process in wounds, burns, and surgical sites.
  • Neurological Disorders: Conditions like stroke, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative diseases may see improvement with laser therapy, as it enhances neural regeneration and repair.
  • Skin Conditions: From acne to psoriasis and eczema, the therapeutic light can promote skin health and rejuvenation.

By opting for laser therapy, you're not just selecting a treatment. You're adopting a comprehensive approach to health that fosters resilience and addresses the underlying causes of these conditions.

Does Photobiomodulation Work?

The effectiveness of photobiomodulation is not just theoretical. It's backed by scientific research. Various studies have demonstrated its potential benefits for a range of health conditions.

Some key findings are:

  • A meta-analysis of 22 randomized controlled trials showed that photobiomodulation can significantly reduce pain in chronic joint disorders.
  • Research has shown that photobiomodulation can speed up the healing process in wounds and burns by enhancing cellular regeneration.
  • A study found photobiomodulation can improve skin health and relieve conditions like acne and psoriasis.
  • Evidence suggests photobiomodulation can enhance neural regeneration and repair in conditions such as stroke and traumatic brain injury.

Is Photobiomodulation Safe?

As you explore the landscape of comprehensive treatments, the safety of a therapy is as important as its effectiveness. When it comes to photobiomodulation, rest assured that this innovative approach to wellness is not just effective but also safe.

The safety of photobiomodulation is supported by numerous studies, including:

  • A comprehensive review published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that photobiomodulation has an excellent safety profile, with no reported adverse side effects in any of the clinical trials reviewed.
  • According to a study in the Photomedicine and Laser Surgery journal, photobiomodulation showed no adverse effects in treating chronic neck pain.
  • Research in the Lasers in Medical Science journal indicates that photobiomodulation is a safe and effective treatment for oral mucositis, a common side effect of cancer treatments.

Safety is a paramount concern on your journey towards whole-body wellness. With photobiomodulation, you can confidently take a step forward in addressing the root causes of illnesses, promoting resilience, and enhancing your overall health.

Patient Testimonials

Susan Doyle

I started by seeing Dr. Sudhir Rao for my Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) Syndrome. I had an accident in July 2010 that caused nerve damage in my ankle. After treatments and surgery, it spread up the entire left side of my body. The only way to describe how you feel is by saying you’re a human pinball machine ? you just never know where the pain is going to be that minute. I had asked about acupuncture because someone had told me that it worked for them. I was at the point of trying anything to lessen the pain because it was getting worse every day.

Anonymous Patient

I am actually a relatively healthy 50-year-old woman. I try to eat well and exercise, but I (like many) felt the creep of age in the form a subtle pounds and decreasing energy. Dr. Rao helped point me in the direction of the correct detox program for me (Core Restore!) as well as the supplements I needed to boost my metabolism and increase my energy! I still need to eat what works for me and avoid the things that don't, and I still have to exercise every day, but my clothes fit better and I have more energy!!

Anna Smoot

I came to see Dr. Rao with symptoms of chronic fatigue, abdominal pains, depression, and weight gain. I had seen a couple other doctors and they had found that I had very high inflammation levels and over 15 food allergies/sensitivities. They wanted me to just take prescription drugs, but I wanted more than a quick fix. I wanted my health and my life back! When I scheduled the appointment, I was surprised how by helpful Kelly was on the phone. I didn’t know the details of my insurance coverage and Kelly offered to call my insurance for me. I’ve never had anyone at a doctor’s office do that before.

Debbie Helman

After visiting the Shakthi website and reading other patient testimonials, I was curious about the wide variety of treatments that were available. I have a very slow metabolism, was fatigued, had insomnia, back pain, and just didn’t feel as well as I wanted to in general. I had more allergic reactions and respiratory issues in the preceding months before coming to see Dr. Jyothi Rao. I had completed three courses of prednisone while under the treatment of my traditional doctor and was fed up with that cycle and was looking for another path.

Linda J.

I was given the gift of Dr. Rao's integrative specialty care for Christmas in 2016. I didn?t take advantage of it until March of 2017. My mindset at the time was negative. I had heard about changing eating habits and I felt that I liked the foods I was eating and I was nearly 70, so why change now? After meeting with Dr. Rao and hearing her suggestions, I said I would take it one small step at a time and see what happens.

I was in the worst shape of my life

I was in the worst shape of my life with depression and anxiety. I had given up. Shakthi provided me with a manageable plan that included supplements, diet, and an exercise program that has transformed my body and given me a new outlook on life. Perhaps the most surprising outcome was learning how to be healthy and have a good relationship with my body. I am now more productive, energetic, and focused. The fog that had been clouding my thoughts has lifted.

Once placed into the skin, the patient may feel a dull ache at the base of the needle. But acupuncture should never be painful.
