Shakthi Health and Wellness Newsletter: September

Embracing the rhythms of nature by eating with the seasons, starting with the rich, nourishing foods of fall, can bring a sense of harmony and vitality to your meals. When you pair this approach with intermittent fasting and a diet that respects your body’s natural circadian rhythm, you create a powerful foundation for better health and energy.

Imagine savoring autumn’s harvest at just the right time, allowing your body to rest and rejuvenate between meals, and aligning your eating patterns with the cycles of day and night. This mindful, seasonal approach doesn’t just nourish your body; it supports your overall well-being, making healthy living feel more natural and deeply satisfying.

Wellness Insights from Dr. Jyothi Rao

As a physician, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful our daily habits can be in shaping our health, and one of the simplest changes I often recommend is eating with the seasons.

This includes encouraging my patients to explore what’s growing and available locally with each season, and to let that guide their meal choices. This isn’t just about enjoying fresher, more flavorful food, although that’s a wonderful benefit, too.

Eating with the seasons is about giving your body the nutrients it truly needs at the right time of year, and supporting your overall well-being in a natural, sustainable way.

When fall arrives, for example, nature offers us hearty root vegetables, apples, pears, squashes, and dark leafy greens. These foods are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals that help strengthen our immune systems as the weather cools down.

Eating this way also connects us more closely to the natural world. When we pay attention to what’s in season, we support local farmers and enjoy produce that hasn’t traveled halfway around the globe to reach our plates.

I often tell my patients that seasonal eating isn’t about strict rules or perfection. Really, it’s about tuning in, making gradual changes, and noticing how your body feels. Many find that their digestion improves, their energy levels rise, and they feel more grounded and satisfied after meals.

Ultimately, eating with the seasons brings a sense of rhythm and balance to our lives. It’s a joyful, mindful practice that can make healthy eating feel less like a chore and more like an adventure.

September is the perfect time of year for everyone to give it a try. Start by picking up a few items at your local farmer’s market or trying a new seasonal recipe. You might be surprised at how much of a difference these small changes can make.

Easy Ways to Eat with the Seasons

Learn What’s In Season

Take some time to research or use seasonal produce guides to find out which fruits and vegetables are at their peak each month. When you know what’s in season, you can plan your seasonal eating around those ingredients for the best taste and nutrition. Over time, you’ll become more attuned to the natural rhythms of food availability.

Plan Your Meals Around Seasonal Produce

Base your weekly meal plans on what you find in season. This approach encourages variety and ensures you’re getting a wide range of nutrients throughout the year. It can also inspire you to try new recipes and flavors you might not have considered before.

Preserve the Harvest

When certain fruits and vegetables are in abundance, consider freezing, canning, or drying them for later use. Preserving food at its peak can help you enjoy seasonal flavors even when they’re out of season. This is a great way to reduce waste and save money as well.

Try New Recipes

Eating with the seasons is a perfect excuse to expand your cooking repertoire. Look for recipes that highlight seasonal ingredients, or experiment with simple preparations that let natural flavors shine. Trying new dishes keeps meals exciting and helps you appreciate the diversity of each season’s offerings.

Grow Your Own Produce

Even a small garden or a few pots on a balcony can yield fresh herbs, greens, or tomatoes. Growing your own food deepens your connection to the seasons and gives you access to the freshest possible ingredients. Plus, gardening is a rewarding and relaxing activity.

Be Flexible and Have Fun

Seasonal eating doesn’t have to be rigid or overwhelming. If you can’t find a certain ingredient, substitute it with something else that’s fresh and available. The goal is to enjoy food, explore new flavors, and build a healthier relationship with what you eat.

Cozy Autumn Quinoa & Roasted Veggie Bowl Recipe

Enjoy the comforting flavors of fall with this wholesome Autumn Quinoa and Roasted Veggie Bowl. This recipe combines hearty seasonal vegetables, protein-rich quinoa, and a touch of sweetness from roasted apples, which makes it a perfect, nourishing meal as the weather cools.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup quinoa, rinsed
  • 2 cups water or vegetable broth
  • 1 small butternut squash, peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved
  • 1 large carrot, sliced
  • 1 crisp apple, cored and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • ¼ cup dried cranberries
  • ¼ cup toasted walnuts or pecans

For the Maple Dijon Dressing:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Toss the butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, carrot, and apple with olive oil, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Spread the vegetables on a baking sheet and roast for 25–30 minutes, stirring halfway, until they are golden and tender.
  3. In a saucepan, bring water or broth to a boil. Add quinoa, reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes or until the liquid is absorbed. Fluff with a fork.
  4. Whisk together all dressing ingredients in a small bowl.
  5. To assemble, divide quinoa into bowls. Top with roasted veggies and apples, sprinkle with cranberries and toasted nuts, and drizzle with the maple Dijon dressing.
