The Only Resolution You Need in the New Year
This time of year, everyone is full of New Year resolutions, but often, these lofty goals and promises fall to the wayside. This year, resolve to make one resolution that is easy to keep, resolve to focus on you.
Forget the promise of losing 20 pounds by February or the resolution to run a half marathon by March. This year, resolve to turn your focus back to what matters, your overall health and well-being. Through a few simple steps, your resolution to find balance in the New Year can be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
- Eat to fuel your body. Instead of signing up for the latest fad diet, focus on incorporating a diet that fuels the body with the nutrients it needs to function at its best. Every body is unique, which is why there is no one-size-fits-all diet remedy. Start by eliminating foods that have little nutritional value, especially refined, processed foods and drinks that are full of sugar. At Shakthi, we work with patients to identify foods that cause inflammation and focus on an elimination diet that promotes optimal gut health. An elimination diet is not focused on weight loss, per se, but patients are amazed by how reinvigorated they feel once toxic ingredients are removed from their diets. The good news is that weight loss and feeling healthier is often a natural result of eating right. In addition, Shakthi’s physician-supervised Detox program is a great way to re-boot the body and cleanse the liver of toxins that negatively affect all the systems in the body. Patients are amazed at the results of this specialized, 6-week program.
- Rejuvenate the mind. We live busy, stressful lives. After work, kids, family and everyday responsibilities, there’s often little time or energy left to focus on you. This year, make it a point to take a few minutes each day to incorporate a rejuvenating activity into life such as yoga, meditation, a brisk walk outside, or even a few minutes of deep breathing exercises. Taking the time to quiet your mind has many wellness benefits, from lowering blood pressure to helping improve sleep.
- Get your Zzzz’s. Speaking of sleep, getting enough sleep every night is so important for overall health. When the body is deprived of sleep, it lacks the energy to fight infection, for example. Restorative sleep boosts the body’s immune system naturally in addition to contributing to elevated mood and a decrease in depression. An hour before going to bed, unplug; turn off cell phones and devices. The blue light from these devices signals the brain to stay awake. Instead, try meditation or just read a book (Like Dr. Rao’s very own book, Finding Balance) to relax the mind for better sleep.
