Artificial Sweeteners and Increased Risk of Diabetes

A new study published this week in Nature has concluded that artificial sweeteners of all varieties can in certain individuals induce glucose intolerance in the human body and ultimately hasten the development of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Research shows that both the composition and function of Gut Microbiota is directly affected by the consumption of certain sweeteners which in turn directly affects the body’s ability to metabolize glucose.

It is though gut bacteria react to the chemical sweeteners by secreting substances that provoke an inflammatory response– similar to a sugar overdose. Thus including artificial sweeteners such as including saccarin, sucralose, and aspartame in the diet may be causing faulty sugar processing and mobilization. The connection between nutrition and human health is becoming clear. Dietary habits have the ability to transform a person’s health and reduce risk of disease.
